4.5 Stars for Delightful Wandering
This was so much fun because it was a book of travel journeys while a central mystery was being solved. The magic is light and the world building is small to medium. The twists were almost gentle in how they advanced the story and kept the pace, but I loved the biggest one. Extra points for sex-positive storylines and representation.
For me the length of the book was a delight: this is a book to read on a train or a rainy day, a time to dig in and savour the map being unfurled. It’s less hurried than other books but I personally enjoyed the pace. As a FMC, Odessa is not sparkling or extraordinarily bright (she has a mystery that is mainly overlooked) but she’s consistently brave and looking to help others. The Guardian as MMC is essentially a super hunk that is fearless and loyal. Together they want to save the realm and yes, I want to read another huge book of that.
