Elsie Silver, 2025
2.75 Stars for Supported Tree Pose
This one didn’t hit for me personally because I wanted more scenes of Gwen talking with friends and being a member of the community to care more about her and relate to her growth, outside of scenes with Bash and Clyde. When she goes out with the Rose Hill gals, it’s to have wine and get some light advice but I wanted more updates on the characters and to see evidence of Gwen being a true member in their trusted group. I also think there was a greater opportunity to discuss her feelings about her body other than being “curvy” and battling with negative feedback from her father. I would have liked a side character like a younger yoga student in the community with body issues that she mentored and walked with to have discussions on female flesh, self-care, and how to define your own worth.
The son/father storyline with Tripp/Bash didn’t resound with me, and Bash saying, “I saw her first” is too caveman for my taste. Tripp being a douche nozzle is an interesting development, because it made the stakes uneven and unfair, but overall it felt like Gwen was a prize and Tripp kept coming back to keep unsettling the dynamic. I wanted Tripp’s storyline resolved early on so we could spend more time on building a solid relationship between the two and Bash working on his mental health for longer, independent of Gwen.
I definitely believe the Elsie Silver fans will love this book because it expands on the odd couple duo of Bash and Clyde, and they will appreciate Gwen as both nurturing and assertive. I am half in on this series but I keep tuning in, so count me in but leave me a seat in the back.
